The original Town of Halifax was established in 1749, named after a British statesman, the 2nd Earl of Halifax, later becoming a city in 1842. Today, the municipality is a major economic centre in Atlantic Canada, home to a number of government services and private companies. Halifax prides itself on its high-quality neighbourhoods, including Spring Garden, the North End and the Quinpool District. Halifax is also known as a highly walkable city, hosting a variety of urban gardens, public squares, forested parks and historic sites.
