The urban community of Dartmouth is part of the Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) of Nova Scotia, formed in 1996. At that time, the former city of Dartmouth was dissolved. Because the original area of Dartmouth makes up the urban core of the newer municipality, it’s officially designated as part of the capital district.
The Dartmouth area was founded in 1750, functioning initially as a sawmill and agricultural outpost of Halifax. Dartmouth was incorporated as a town in 1873, and finally as the official City of Dartmouth in 1961. This came after the town was permanently linked to Halifax by the Angus L. Macdonald Bridge that opened in 1955 and triggered rapid suburban growth. Dartmouth covers a land area of more than 58 square kilometers, home to an estimated population of roughly 68,000 people.
