The suburban community of Bedford is part of the Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) in Nova Scotia, situated on the northwestern end of Bedford Basin, an extension of Halifax Harbour. A population of roughly 23,000 people live here.
Founded in 1750, the original village adopted its name a century later, around 1850, in honour of the 4th Duke of Bedford, John Russell. Bedford was finally incorporated as its own independent town in 1980, which lasted just a short time until it became part of the new HRM in 1996. Bedford remains a well-established sailing community, home to the Bedford Basin Yacht Club and Marina. The Maritime Road Hockey League is located in Bedford as well, in addition to six ice surfaces and a variety of lakes for summertime swimming.
